Why Your Child’s Real Moments Make the Best Photos
If you’ve ever hesitated to book a photo session because your child might cry, wiggle, pout, or refuse to smile—this post is for you.
As a family photographer, I’ve heard it all:
“My toddler won’t sit still.” “My baby’s teething and cranky.” “My kids never smile at the same time.”
And to that, I say: Perfect. Let’s do it!!!

The Birthday Girl

The picture above was my very first session. When I say this little cutie pie gave me a run for my money that is for sure what she did. The session was mainly for her 2nd birthday but included images of her blue-eyed baby sister. I thought I had come prepared. Balloons, bubbles, clappy hands, anything to get a child's attention for that perfect shot.
Little did I know she had other plans, and it didn't include sitting still! It didn't take me long to realize I would be working around her. Whatever she felt like doing I was just along for the ride. Looking at the picture you would never know she was actually reaching for a balloon her mom was teasing her with trying to get those ants in her pants to quit biting her for a second.
Kids aren't meant to be perfect
Children are expressive, unpredictable, and beautifully raw. Their moods shift like the wind—and that’s not a flaw. That’s magic.
Some of the most meaningful photos I’ve ever taken weren’t planned. They weren’t posed. They weren’t “Pinterest-perfect.” They were real.
A toddler clutching a leaf like treasure. A pout that turns into a belly laugh two seconds later. A sibling whispering a secret. A tearful hug that says more than words ever could.
These moments matter. They’re messy, emotional, joyful, whiny, wild—and they’re exactly what life looks like.
The Power of Unscripted Moments
We don’t go through life in poses. So why would we want to remember our moments that way?
Sure, posed photos can be beautiful. I’ll always guide you gently through a few classic shots. But the ones that stay with you—the ones that make you laugh, cry, and feel something years later—are the ones we didn’t try to catch.
They just happened. And I was there to document them.
What I See Through My Lens
When I photograph your family, I’m not looking for perfection. I’m looking for connection.
I want to see your child’s personality shine through—whether that’s a shy glance, a burst of giggles, or a full-on meltdown. I want to capture the way you comfort them, the way they reach for you, the way they light up when they spot a butterfly or a popsicle.
These are the moments that tell your story. And they’re the ones I treasure most.

Tips to Ease Your Mind
If you’re still feeling nervous, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Come as you are. I’ll meet your child where they’re at—no pressure, no expectations.
Bring what comforts them. Snacks, loveys, favorite toys—whatever helps them feel safe.
Trust the process. Even if it feels chaotic, I promise there’s beauty in it. I’ll find it.
Your child doesn’t need to be perfect. They just need to be themselves. That’s where the magic lives—and I’d be honored to capture it.
So go ahead. Book the session. Let them be wild, wonderful, and totally themselves. Because those are the moments you’ll want to remember.
