5 Things to Consider Before Your Photoshoot

Thoughtful tips to help you feel confident, connected, and ready to capture what matters most.

Planning a photoshoot can feel exciting—and a little overwhelming. Whether you're booking a themed mini session or a full family shoot, a little preparation goes a long way in making your experience joyful and stress-free. As a photographer who believes in documenting real moments with heart, here are five things I encourage every client to consider before stepping in front of the lens.

1. Choose a Location That Reflects You

The location sets the emotional tone of your session. A wide-open field might evoke freedom and playfulness, while a wooded trail can feel intimate and cozy. I always look for places with natural textures—tall grass, weathered fences, soft light filtering through trees—that create depth and warmth in your photos.

You don’t need a “perfect” spot. You need a meaningful one. Maybe it’s your backyard, your favorite walking trail, or a quiet corner of a local farm. I’ll help you find a location that feels like home and photographs beautifully.

Tip: Think about what season you’re in—fall foliage, spring blooms, or summer golden light can all add magic.

2. Dress for Comfort and Connection

Your clothing should support the story you’re telling. Soft fabrics, layers, and earthy tones help you blend naturally into outdoor settings. Avoid logos or neon colors—they can distract from the emotion of the image.

If you’re a family, aim for coordinated—not matching—looks. Think textures like knits, denim, linen, and accessories that add personality. And most importantly, wear something that lets you move, cuddle, and be yourself.

3. Pick the Right Time of Day

Lighting is everything. Golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset—creates soft, warm tones that flatter skin and add a dreamy glow to your images. But timing also means choosing a moment when your family feels relaxed and present.

If your little ones are happiest in the morning, we’ll work with that. If evenings are calmer, we’ll chase that sunset. I’ll help you balance light and mood, so your session feels effortless and joyful.

Bonus: I scout each location ahead of time to find the best angles and light for your chosen time.

4. Add Personal Touches

Props aren’t just decorative—they’re emotional anchors. A football for your UGA-loving crew, a popsicle from Happy Licks, a quilt passed down through generations… these details tell your story in a way that words can’t.

I love helping clients incorporate meaningful items that reflect their personalities, traditions, or current season of life. Even something simple—a favorite book, a pair of boots, a handmade sign—can elevate your gallery from pretty to powerful.

5. Let Go of Perfection

This is the big one. The best photos come from real moments—not stiff poses or forced smiles. A windblown laugh, a muddy boot, a spontaneous hug… these are the images that make your heart skip a beat years from now.

Come as you are. I’ll guide you gently, help you relax, and create space for connection. My sessions are designed to be playful, low-pressure, and full of heart. You don’t need to perform—you just need to be present.

I promise: the magic happens when you stop trying to make it perfect and start letting it be real.
